Once Was

Chapter 25

The shelter's hospital was a mess. They were lacking supply. And they were trying to salvage equipment and medications that they were willing to forgo proper sanitation. Saddest part was some military personnel had died because of sepsis already. And if my operation went wrong, there would be a possibility that I'd lose my arm.

As they wheeled me into the Operating Room theater, antiseptic flooded my senses and I had to cough to clear it from my lungs. They had to strap me down on the operating table incase got conscious mid operation. I looked around. It looked like a typical Operating room with a lot less equipment, which really bothered me. Orthopedic operations usually have tons of things they need to prepare. Sometimes I wanted to be ignorant of what they'd do to me. Ignorance would have been a welcomed bliss.

The Anesthesiologist injected me with a sedative that made me feel weirdly at ease and happy. The operation ran smoothly at first but then I started feeling the pain all at once that I could not stop myself from screaming. And if I wasn't tied up I could have killed the doctor who's operating on me.

I felt them screwing some of my bones together and tweaking with the immobilizers inside my flesh. I sounded like a wailing animal, not forming any words, just pure agony and pain could be heard in my cry.

"Put her on morphine!" The surgeon shouted to the anesthesiologist.

"I've given her enough to kill a grown man!" he shouted back. "She wouldn't survive if I gave her more."

I gave off another wail as the surgeon started drilling into my bone. The Operating room nurse came to my view. I remembered her. She was a colleague. She held my hand in sympathy, whilst looking at me with pity.

"P-p-please." I begged her in a hoarse quiet voice. "Make the pain stop. I don't care if you overdose me." But before I could beg some more the surgeon started drilling once again. The nurse placed a bite block on my mouth. I closed my eyes and bit as hard as I could on the bite block she gave me. Tears were falling as I felt them tinker on the immobilizer that they are placing in my left arm.

I wanted to just vanish. I wanted to just die. The pain was so intense the room started seeing white. I could feel my breathing starting to relax. Then numbness enveloped me. They had just just injected me with a more complex form of anesthetic.

It started like any other insignificant dream, until it became so vivid. I was sitting in a very spacious and airy living room. The windows were opened and I could hear the water flowing from a nearby river. I looked around and realized the place was so familiar because it housed our country's president before the infection.

"Welcome to my place." He greeted me in his cool toned voice, sitting in a chair across from me. "I wasn't expecting you to visit." He was wearing a loose short sleeved white T-shirt and a pair of sweatpants. "Is everything alright with you in that shelter of yours?" he asked, now with a worried expression.

I was in awe of how laid back he looked, aside from his translucent blue eyes, he looked like the man I loved. "I am having my first operation." I said with sullenness in my tone. "They had to drug me with what they have because we are lacking with legal medications. I'm heavily medicated right now physically, and I don't think I'll be able to wake up."

"You'll wake up." He said with a smile reassuring me. The next thing I knew he was caressing my right cheek he was kneeling on one knee in between my legs. "I'll make arrangements for your shelter to get needed supply. I don't like seeing you crest-fallen. Remember you have two years with them so you don't have to worry."

I sighed, accepting the fact that he is the most powerful being on the planet as of that moment, "Why are you so determined to get me anyway?" I asked, looking at his eyes searching for what remained of the man I wanted to see.

"Because I need a queen. Eternity is a long time to be alone you know." he was chuckling while playing with my long hair. Yes, he made my hair long. He sat himself next to me like an unwelcome cat, burying his nose on my head and enveloping his arms on my shoulders.

"But I don't want to be a vampire." I stubbornly said in my little rebellion against him changing me.

"Then live as a human as long as you want. I'll change you at the last possible moment." was his reply in a very calm manner. Just like the Xed I knew.

"I'll be wrinkly and old by that time. Who'd want a gray old vampire anyway?" I said, rolling my eyes at him.

I got distracted by a giant wolf-like chimera walking outside the window, patrolling the vicinity. That's when I felt his arms wrapping around me from behind on my mid section. He felt solid and cool, it was like I was really with him at that point in time. I'd give everything to be with the person he once was. The man who my heart longed for.
