Sky, clouds, and a little sun. The day inspired positivity with the diversity of people in transit, each with a different way of welcoming the first day of the week: there were those simply passing by each other while others were sitting on the park benches by the shores of a lake.
On the other hand, not even the charming panorama took away the feeling of being a horrendous day for her, she was concerned with a thousand doubts overloading her conscience, and the fact of not knowing what to expect burned her inside. Even accessing the reception became a challenge. As an act of education, she greeted the middle-aged doorman dressed in a black suit, who corresponded to the act of sympathy by opened the massive glass door with genuine courtesy, something that he did not show often since his companions did not greet him with such equality.
She wished she were somewhere else in the world, where she wasn't being evaluated and she didn't have to take a deep breath in the elevator because she felt like drowning outside of it.
Serena contracted and relaxed her hands repeatedly, she hated being the center of attention for all the employees who pretended to be focused on their tasks, so much so that if it were not that few were hiding it, she would not have noticed it.
"Good morning, Miss Katerine" greeted the Asian receptionist from yesterday.
She was wearing a pale pink suit jacket and baggy pants, her now mahogany hair in a neat bun and her porcelain face accompanying her radiant smile "we didn't get a chance to make a formal introduction yesterday, my name is Kim booming," Serena gave her almost the same smile as she got out of the elevator.
"Nice to meet you, Kim," they shook hands.
"Is nice meeting you too, if you don't mind I'll update you with today's duties and notify Mr. Holmes of your arrival," Kim continued, prompting her to walk with a gesture. And so she did, trying to keep her pace behind Kim.
She took a deep breath. The sole mention of his name had her pressure rising. She had stayed awake overnight thinking of why he would keep her after their messy background.
She recognized the way to her boss to be's office and for a moment she thought they were going headlong to see him but then Kim turned to the right side of the hall where just now she realized there was a short hallway with a white door of those modern woods at the end of it.
She opened the door and gave way for her to go in first. She couldn't believe her eyes, she eyed Avery corner in disbelief: the studio was elegant, it had white walls that matched whit the desk, and even artificial flowerpots in the odd corner; there were also some simple abstract paintings and what looked like a mini-library.
It was certainly outrageous.
"I hope you are pleased with your study, if you need to change anything do not hesitate to let me know," spoke Kim behind her; she then faced her "when you are installed, pass by the presidency to catch up" she smiled kindly with her hands clasped on her lap "well, I wish you a good day, I will notify the president of your arrival "
The aforementioned smiled and affirmed almost imperceptibly.
" Thank you, Kim "
Once she was alone, she let go of all the air she was holding. Tomorrow she will bring her belongings to her new office, hopefully, she could give it a touch of her own, everything seemed very abstract and very formal maybe it was time to make it more welcoming. She walked over to the heavy curtains and uncovered them, illuminating the entire room.
She looked surprised and laughed, now it was a bit more of her style. She looked at the landscape: crowded roads and skyscrapers pretending to touch the clear sky.
Her office was more than five hundred meters high. Spending her Every day in it would be interesting, heights were not liked by everyone, but she was sure that she would never tire of the views.
She sighed deeply with a hopeful look and sat down in the huge leather seat at her desk. It was time to put everything to her liking and start the day, she had to decide on a password for the computer, her smile deteriorated when her mind found one on its own and ordered the fingers to dial each key.
"Kloe".
She looked at the screen sadly and blinked quickly to avoid the inevitable, a tear slid down her cheek and she wiped it forbidding another to come out of it.
It was melancholy that was forming little by little in her heart, she confirmed the password change and she avoided touching another key as if it would somehow cause combustion.
"Miss Katerine" the aforementioned raised her gaze in a fit of surprise. And eventually, the voice of the new boss of hers had not only been in her head. "I need you to follow me to my office" he studied her discreetly, Curious about what was wrong with her.
However, Serena contracted her hands into fists as she stood up coldly observing the man who was the protagonist of her greatest fears and the reason for her biggest mistakes. deciding that it wasn't wise to manifest any of the feelings he raised in her, she camouflages the hatred that she felt right now imitating one of Kim's smiles.
"Sir," she said by way of greeting, looking with a firm look at a point next to his face. his arrival had been so imperceptible that she did not when he got into her office.
As Serena recovered from the slip of a few moments ago, she hoped that no sign of emotions would show on her face. The man studied her for a few seconds and after he was done observing her, he indifferently began to walk to a corner of her office and she had to hurry up to keep up with his footsteps.
The man was indeed tall and muscular, she couldn't see her way being behind him, so she decided to walk next to him only to discover that he was guiding her to nothing more and nothing less than a sliding door on the right side from the desktop. A door that she had not realized existed in her wishful admiration.
And as if that were not enough as they both entered she realized it was linked to the presidential office, without a word, she stood in front of the desk she avoided looking behind her to check that her boss was still there.
He was supposed to bring her up to speed, shouldn't they talk head-on?
She avoided snorting as the seconds passed and he kept his position behind her, deliberately letting her remain in front of his desk, she could only predict her presence behind her, for the rest of him she gave no indication whatsoever.
One minute more with the room into profound silence has begun to get her nervous, she examined each of the skyscrapers that were seen in the large window in the background, shifting the weight from one foot to the other, and just when anxiety began to affect her intellect he made an act of presence.
"I need you to be present like this in my office in the days ahead," he spoke firmly, his voice sounding just a few steps from her, giving the feeling that he whispered it in her ear, "has waiting unnerved you?" In front of him Serena frowned as her understanding led her to anger, He had played this little game with her to give her a lesson for her supposed belatedness at work.
She controlled the urge of telling him what he could do with his lessons and instead responded firmly imitating his cold voice.
"No, Mr. Holmes ... patience is the virtue of the wise," she snapped delicately, she was not going to accept any lessons from him.
