XIV: Hua Shan Part II

By the end of the first day through such a rough terrain, we knew we weren’t alone.

It wasn’t something visible, but spiritual. However, this time it was the horses, not Yin, who alerted us to it.

The half-starved mount where Kumiko rode neighed and refused to budge when we came out of a particularly large crater. After much coaxing from my faithful maid, the horse finally moved forward ever so slowly, but since then, I too became more cautious.

‘Selene, this would be the perfect time for you to wake up.’ I said just as another horse got spooked, nearly sending Zhongyi flying. This time it took us longer still to relax the horse and Bao Hu and I shared a knowing look, finally deciding to relieve the horses of our supplies.

If something was going to attack us, at least we could use the horses like bait so that we could run.

Harsh, perhaps, but at this point horses could be replaced, not us.

After a few more steps, a cold mist swept over the ground around our feet.
