XIV: Hua Shan Part III

It happened at night.

A nearby scream woke all of us up. “Zhongyi! No!”

I was on my feet before the second syllable was out and looking around for danger, only to find my guard, Zhongyi, struggling against something invisible. I could see Yin hanging from Bao Hu’s head, who was struggling to stop Xinrui from running to our friend.

“Stop it, Xinrui! You’re going to get everyone killed!”

“No! I can save him!”

In a movement that defied her little frame, she pulled free from Hu, who made an abortive motion to get her back, before suddenly jumping away.

And we all watched in slow motion as something split her in two from shoulder to hip.

The grotesque image, followed by the screams of pain from Zhongyi, made us all realize that we were in a tight spot even before Selene’s warning came to me:

‘RUN!!’

I grabbed Kumiko, hosted her up, and repeated Selene’s order “RUN!!” right before bolting in the general direction that my spiritual guardian had said earlier.
