CH19 (383), Observation, Documentation, And Categorization

I made it to the area that had been allotted to my Pokemon, and once I did, I began calling out Toedscruel together with his whole family. The gaggle of Oddish, and Gloom, along with Vileplume, Toedscool, and Toedscruel checked out their new surroundings after they appeared.

"As I previously told you, this is where you will be staying until the other property is ready, and the research on your species is complete," I told Toedscruel and he nodded in acceptance.

"You have the whole place to yourself since I am not planning to add anyone else to this place. You don't have to worry about anyone stepping in or out of the area on accident since the borders are separated by a fence.

Still, please don't leave the sanctuary without giving me a heads-up since the likelihood of an accident happening in case you do is not low," I purposely said a bit louder so that everyone else could hear that as well.

"I'll make sure that everyone knows not to wander out of the area assigned to us," Vileplume assured me and I gave her a thankful smile before I turned my attention to big T.

"Professor Oak, that is the head researcher and the boss of this place will be coming over any time now to take a look at you. He's also the one who will be heading the research on your species.

Please be respectful to him, he is one of the strongest trainers in the world, and someone that deserves respect. Moreover, I'm sure he will be nice to you since he's a really good person, so I expect you to return the courtesy," I cautioned Toedscruel and nearly jumped in surprise when I heard someone speak up behind me.

"I'm happy to hear that you think so highly of me, my boy," the professor said while walking up to my side.

He stopped there and began to observe Toedscruel. I called over Toedscool as well while he was focused on Toedscruel, but I did so mentally to not disrupt the professor.

"I have to congratulate you for having a dark gold stage Pokemon join you, not to mention one that represents an until now unknown Pokemon species," Professor Oak said a minute later and I thanked him.

"I've organized everything we need for our project, but I see no harm in doing some preliminary checks for now," he followed up with a chuckle.

"Do you have a pen and writing pad at hand? If so, get ready to make notes," he addressed me before he began describing what he had noted.

"Toedscruel's upper body resembles a mushroom cap and is black in color. He has three circular pink protrusions on top. One of these protrusions is much smaller than the others and sits in the front and center of the cap.

The other two are quite a bit bigger and are located in the middle of the right as well as the left of the part of the top. Of note is that the location and look of these protrusions mirror the ones of the Tentacruel species," he began dictating while scrutinizing Toedscruel, and I dutifully copied what he said verbatim.

"The rim on Toedscruel's cap is beige in color and has multiple folds, which also brings about a resemblance to a mushroom cap. Below the cap is his beige-colored lower body.

The lower body contains two slanted eyes, a black tube-like mouth with yellow lips, and 10 tentacles. If we stay with the mushroom analogy, then those tentacles could be said to resemble the mycelium which is what the root of a mushroom is called.

However, I'd like to add that the tentacles also look a bit like asparagus, with them being beige on top and yellow at the bottom," he paused for a bit when he said the last bit and hummed thoughtfully.

"Put the last part in brackets, please. I think the mycelium comparison fits better as a description," he requested and I did as requested.

"Overall there is a distinct resemblance to the Tentacruel species even if Toedscruel is its own species. Chief among the indicators for such a separation is its Pokespeech pattern as well as its typing. However, further research has to be done to reach a definite answer," the professor finished before pulling out a measuring tape.

"Do you mind if I take some measurements?" The professor asked Toedscruel and only approached him after he gave his permission.

"Can you lower your body a bit," the professor requested before he began measuring Toedscruel's main body after said Pokemon acquiesced to his request.

"The diameter of the main body is 108 cm, while the maximum height is 90 cm. The upper part of the body makes up 60 cm, while the lower part constitutes the other 30 cm. The two protrusions have a diameter of 15 cm, while the small one in the center has a diameter of 3 cm.

The tube or trunk is approximately 28 cm long and has a diameter of about 4 cm. Toedscruel's tentacles have a passive length of 1 meter, but can be extended and retracted at will," he paused there for a moment.

"Could you please retract your tentacles as much as possible," he asked Tordscruel who complied.

He began shrinking and only stopped when his tentacles were reduced to less than half their usual size. The professor measured their new length before he cleared his throat.

"The maximum retracted length of Toedscruel's tentacles is 40 cm, so he managed to reduce their length by 60%," he did another pause here to indicate that he was going to say something that I did not have to note down.

"Toedscruel, now, I'd like to ask you to extend your tentacles as much as possible," he asked and my Pokemon played along.

Toedscruel pointed one of his tentacles to the side and it began to grow. It kept going for a bit before it finally stopped growing, but at that point, I was sure that it had more than quintupled. I was not sure how long his tentacle had become exactly, but the good old professor had already headed to the tip of Toedscruel's tentacle.

He called me over and asked me to keep the tape in place, while he headed back to the other end of the tentacle, which was on Toedscruel's lower body.

"The maximum length of Toedscruel's tentacles is 613 cm, so he managed to increase their length by approximately 510%," he declared before pausing for a moment.

"Thank you Toedscruel. You can retract your tentacle now," the professor said while putting away his measuring tape.

"Taking the size of Toedscruel's main body and the standard length of his tentacles into account, his formal height is around 190 cm," he declared and actually began to pull out a large scale before he requested Toedscruel to step onto it.

"Toedscruel weighs 61 kg at his standard size," he announced and I jotted that down as well.

"Alright, before we move on to his abilities, I would like to repeat the previous process with Toedscool as well," he announced before requesting Toedscool to go through the same motions as his father.

"Toedscool has a bulbous pink body with a yellow dot just above his eyes, and two larger yellow circles located further above on either side of his head. He has small pupils on his eyes and his lower body flares out into frayed flaps," was the description Professor Oak gave that I ended up jotting down.

Toedscool's head/main body ended up being approximately 30 cm in height and 20 cm in width, while the standard size of his tentacles was 60 cm. Toedscool's tentacles could be shortened to 30 cm and increased to up to 200 cm, but his standard height was 90 cm.

The professor made sure to weigh Toedscool as well, and he ended up weighing 33 kg. Once Toedscool had gone through all examinations that Toedscruel had, the professor thanked him for his cooperation and turned his attention back to big T.

"Alright, Toedscruel, what can you tell me about your ability," the professor inquired and Toedscruel began describing the effect of his abilities.

All Pokemon had an initiative knowledge regarding the functions of their abilities even if they did not know their names, which was what the professor was banking on.

In this case, Toedscruel knew exactly what his abilities were called as well as their functions since I went through them with him. Regardless, he began describing the effects of Mycelium Might to Professor Oak.

"Interesting," he said while stoking his chin. "According to Toedscruel's description, his ability allows his status moves to ignore any abilities of his target. However, in exchange, it slows down the release of the status moves," he summarized Toedscruel's explanation and I dutifully noted down what he said.

"I have not come across this particular ability until now, so it is likely an ability that is unique to the Toedscruel-line. Since that is the case we do not have a name for it, so the ability title is pending," he added and I added that as well.

Still, while I was doing that, I was wondering if the professor and his team would end up naming Mycelium Might something different than it is actually called, at least according to my observe function.

Considering that the observe function could draw knowledge from the world/universe itself if necessary, I was inclined to believe that "Mycelium Might" was the correct name. I'd try to influence the naming so that we ended up with the right one.

"Furthermore, it seems Toedscruel managed to gain a talent during his breakthrough to the dark gold stage, that allows him to ignore the slowing effect of his ability, effectively negating its drawback," he said while I was thinking about the ability title.

"Toedscruel has also shared that his second ability is Immunity. The fact that he has a second ability indicates that his potential is at or above 4 stars," he finished before turning to Toedscool.

"Toedscool, I would like to know if you have the same ability as your father," he inquired and after confirming that to be the case, the professor turned to me.

"After verifying the effect with Toedscool, I can temporarily confirm that the status ability is the main ability of the Toedscruel line. I come to this conclusion because Toedscool has admitted that it was his only ability for a long time before he unlocked his second ability.

This indicates that Toedscool has recently had his potential improved to 4 stars. Moreover, that his second ability is Immunity as well, makes it likely that Immunity is their common second ability," he declared and I made sure to note it down as well even if I had already known that to be the case.

"I would like to point out that Toedscool still has the slower release drawback, so the negation of said drawback is for now something unique to Toedscruel," he added and I wrote it down.

He asked for permission to draw some blood from both and after they agreed to let him draw some, he pulled out two needles from his coat. He drew roughly 100 ml from each Pokemon and thanked both Toedscruel as well as Toedscool for their cooperation after putting the needles away. Once he had done that, he turned to me.

"Alright, that should suffice as a preliminary examination," he said with a satisfied smile. "Please include that Toedscruel is at the (low) dark gold stage and that Toedscool is at the (low) bronze stage."

I nodded and did as requested. We then bid everyone at the sanctuary goodbye, and I followed the professor toward the main lab. Professor Oak headed to one of the available labs and pulled out 10 tubes.

He labeled half with Toedscruel and the other half with Toedscool, before he evenly transferred the blood he drew to their respective tubes. Then he called over one of his assistants and handed the tubes to him with the order to send them for analysis.
