Jem left the waiting line to stand at the side thinking to herself if Matteo forgot she can't get into heaven without him. She's already miserable as it is, making her wait is the last thing she needs right now.
She opened her bag and brought out her phone. She quickly dialed his number and held the phone to her left ear.
She heard a familiar ringtone behind her, it made her conscious of the seductive cologne of the man she wanted to see. The effect of his presence was stronger than usual, it made her bite her lower lip.
Slowly she turned to face his taming firm chest, as usual, he left the first two buttons of his sleeve open. She slowly lifted her chin to his neck and saw the black necklace he always hides in his collar. Her eyes then went up to his lips which made her gulp dryly and then blink like a little teddy bear.
They both had their phone held up to their ear but neither said a word to the other or into their phones.
"Hello, Jemima." He finally said to break the short silence. The way he said her name with his unusual accent melted a bit of her anxiety. She was relieved to see him.
Their eyes were locked in a gaze as they both held down their phone. She has a habit of blinking a lot when his eyes are fixed on hers, he couldn't help but admired how adorable she looks flapping her eyelashes like a little doll.
Her attitude made him wear a soft smile that added glimmer to his winter grey eyes. Her heart skipped a beat staring at his perfect face lighting up with a mocking smile.
Her face flushed watching those eyes lingering from her head to her toe. "You look nice." He said his eyes now fixed on big round eyes.
She frowned to avoid enjoying whatever he was doing to her, his presence, his eyes, his scent. She couldn't let herself take pleasure in his effect on her. She needs to focus on her mission here, saving her father and her mother's bakery.
His smile turned into a frown. He knows she is not in the mood for fun and he is not very good at lighting up a girl's mood. He knows he had done it before but that was unintended. It just happened, doing it on purpose is hard, and watching her doe eyes stare at him like that is even harder.
He started walking into the club without uttering another word to her. She wanted him to say something more like how she was doing but he didn't. So she just followed him without question.
She heard him tell the bouncer that they were together. Tim immediately apologized for doubting her earlier. She didn't care cause he was only doing his job.
They entered the entrance and went through a small lobby into the main hall. At least that's what she thought seeing a lot of people inside. It wasn't as congested as regular clubs and the people were classy and orderly. They received good entertainment from a popular band. 'The Ellas'. Jem has only heard their music but has not seen their live performance.
It was amazing to be in Heaven, but enjoying every moment of it was impossible when her dad is still behind bars and her mom's bakery is at stake.
They left what she taught was the club into a hallway. Her lips fell open seeing such a place exist in real life, there were open rooms by the sides and a few people partying inside. One of the rooms had a snooker inside and enough room to make it look like a club on its own.
She later found herself on a balcony, this place was dark with glaring red lights. There were fewer people here but she couldn't see anyone's face. She's very sure this is where the action happens with stench of drugs and alcohol.
The place was too dark to know where she is going and worse she couldn't find Matt anywhere. She stood at a spot trying to find the tallest silhouette in the room hoping it would be him.
Her heart was pounding hard, Matt can't leave her by herself in a place like this. She noticed someone coming close to her, it made her chuckle with relief. But when the person got closer it wasn't Matt. She quickly turned around to get away from the stranger. Waiting to find out what he wants is not an option.
She crashed into the hard body of another man but he caught her before she lost balance. She couldn't see his face clearly but his scent gave her this feeling of comfort. The man held her hand and led her out of the balcony they arrived at the pool area. How big is this place?
The lighting was a lot clearer here. She looked at him and wonder if she is still not used to his warm and soft yet powerful hands. He loosened his grip on her hand and studied her for a while before walking off.
Jem followed and noticed the people here were a lot more different, there are the most well-dressed people here and she assumed its a pool party, it looks like it. Jem felt timider to be present with such affluent people.
Clarice and Diane stood at the other side of the pool staring at Jem and Matt walk towards them. Her piercing gaze was a lot more menacing seeing her with Matt.
She noticed Clarice had her eyes specifically on her. Though she was standing on the other side of the pool Jem still couldn't handle her death glare.
Matteo was walking toward her, or perhaps the entrance behind her with long strides. Jem doesn't want to face Clarice now, she might embarrass her in front of everyone. She stopped jogging behind Matt and called out his name.
"Matt," Her voice was frail. He quickly stopped to attend to her.
"Where are we going? I came here to talk to you, we need to talk now." He gazed at her eyes for a while. Her innocence brewed guilt inside him.
"I like to get comfortable when I have a decent conversation." He replied stoically.
"Can't we talk here? I don't mind."
"We're going to the third floor, Jemima." He walked off. She reluctantly followed behind.
Clarice stopped them on the way, Jem had to stand behind Matt to avoid getting involved in their conversation. It's not like Clarice won't find a way to drag her in.
"Mr. Valdez." She stretched out her hand to receive his. He raised her hand and kissed her knuckles.
"Ms. McGrath, what a pleasant surprise."
"I was hoping to see you today."
"I wish I had the time but I've got a date." He moved one step to the side to reveal cowering Jem.
"The Baker." She scorned. Jem didn't dare to look her in the eyes. She kept her head down and let Matt do the talking.
"You do remember her. We'll get going now, see you around Clarice." She forced a smile as they both walk past her.
They entered an elevator and went up, then arrived at the third floor of the building they entered. It's like another world inside heaven. This floor was more like an open space, there was no one except three men wearing white tusk and they seemed to be waiting to take their order.
One of them welcomed them and then led them to a round couch. This place must be the reason why this place is called heaven. The entire place was made of ice or something that looks like ice and glass. She was absorbed by the beauty. Even the round couch caught her attention. It was silver in color and looked hard but when she sat on it, it was soft and very comfortable.
He sat beside her and asked what she thought of the place. She continued to admire the refinement, calmness, and coolness of the place. It was bigger than any hall she came across in the building.
She couldn't help but wonder why he brought her here and on a day like this. She doesn't want to believe he thinks she came here to have a date with him but had to clarify that before going to the point of her coming here.
"This is not a date." She frowned.
