Darien eyes roamed the faces of the customers in Aubrey's bakery. The satisfied smile on their faces as they ate brought a Duchenne smile to his lips.
He loves to see the delighted faces of the customers when Aubrey ran the place. Now he is so proud that his little girl is as good as her mother.
Despite the crisis, she is still able to keep her favorite customers patronizing her.
His gazes stopped at the faces of two pissed girls. They had their eyes on him.
It was the two girls he came with. They were getting tired of waiting for their order.
He pointed at the door behind the counter and then gestured at them that their order was on its way.
Slowly his eyes continue to search the room. Subconsciously he noticed the frowning face of a little girl standing in front of him her hands crossed on her chest.
"Hey," He chuckled.
"You're holding up the line." She said puckering her lips.
"I'm almost done here, sweetie."
"I'm not your, sweetie, you..."
"Language Sara." A man suddenly yelled.
The sudden voice caught Darien by surprise. It took him time before he saw the man who spoke.
A rather good-looking man appeared behind the little girl smiling at Darien. Darien was forced to reciprocate a grin.
"I'm sorry." The man said then squats before his little girl.
"What did I tell you about patience."
"But dad he's been standing there for a long time I just want my long John." She pouted pointing at her favorite donut and showing off her irresistible puppy dog eyes to her father.
"Please is Jem going to be quick, we're kind of in a hurry." The man spoke to Darien who was lost staring at his moving lips.
He has no idea what the man just said but he recalled the little girl requesting some donuts.
"You want long john I can get you long john." He quickly went around the counter and served the little girl her favorite donut.
"Oh, I didn't know you work here." The man said grinning.
"He doesn't, he just wants to fill in for her cause Jem needs to get her man. He's not man enough. Cute but not enough." She bit a huge chunk of the donut given to her. The men chuckle at her comment.
"Dad I'm also gonna need ice cream." She rejoined.
"What flavor."
"Plain vanilla will do."
She walked off eating her donut.
"She's adorable," Darien said with light glimmering in his eyes.
"Yeah, isn't she? She takes after her mother." The man deep his hand into his pocket and brought out his wallet.
"That's cool. I'll get you the uh... Ice cream."
"I'll also take one of those ice cream sandwiches to go, please."
"Good choice." Darien winked at him.
Darien went into the door behind the counter and met Jem already done serving his order. He took them from her and then told her to bring one more Ice cream sandwich and vanilla ice cream.
After giving his order he left to serve his friends while maintaining eye contact with the man standing near the counter.
"Aren't you joining us?" one of the girls spoke as soon she noticed he was about to take his leave.
"No, you guys enjoy yourselves, I have to give Jem a hand."
"A hand you say, or you just want to flirt with that hot guy over there."
"Gross no! I have a boyfriend."
"Of course." they both answered sarcastically then giggled.
He didn't mind with them he just went over to the counter to see if Jem was done.
He took the order from her so he can hand it over to the man himself.
The man collected it from him smiling nervously as he handed Darien some money. He then dropped the change he received into the tip jar.
"Am I going to be seeing more of you?"
"For now you will."
"That's good news. I'm Henry by the way."
"Darien." He took Henry's hand for a handshake.
After this, Henry took his daughter and left the bakery.
Jem came out of the room and noticed Darien watching Henry and his daughter leave the bakery with a smile on his face.
Despite the door now closed behind them he kept staring. Jem touched his shoulders from behind him.
He turned swiftly to see what touched him, he later sighed in relief seeing it was only Jem.
"What the... You scared me."
"Em... Were you checking him out?"
He furrowed his brow at the sight of the silly smile she had on.
"What?"
"Well, you look like you were."
"I was not. I just like the sight of a single dad looking after his child. It makes me think of what it will look like to have one of my own."
"Awwwwn... That's so beautiful." She held onto his arms blinking spontaneously.
He laughed at how cute she looked wearing her doe eyes most adorably.
"You're gonna make a great dad."
"Stop making me blush you." He covered his face.
His attitude made them both start laughing hard at each other.
They became quiet for a while before Darien finally broke the silence.
"You should go get your man."
Jem's lips fell open as her mind thought of Matt, her man. Is it wrong to be possessive of a man you love but isn't your boyfriend yet? It feels weird thinking about it but she likes the idea.
"I should." She whispered.
"I don't know him much but I like the way he makes you feel."
Her lips spread slowly into a weak smile. She took off her small pink apron.
"Should I go home to change?"
"You smell like chocolate and candies with a hint of coffee."
Jem recalled Matteo telling her she smells like sweets and coffee. She has never been able to figure out if he was just teasing her.
"Is that a good thing?" She seemed a bit anxious.
Darien laughed. "Jem you always smell like that, I guess it sells the idea that you're a baker."
"Again is that a good thing?"
"It's one of your unique qualities. Own it."
Jem exhaled in relief and then smiled. If Matt hated her scent he would have said so.
Jem left the bakery and Darien was in charge of everything.
Jem took a cab into the city headed for the largest firm she would ever see. The building was so big and tall that even a foreigner would hardly have a problem finding it.
She didn't care about how big the place was and the fact that it would be hard to find Matt, she just wants to take whatever chance she gets to see his face.
Her driver pulled his car over while she stared at the boldly sculpted write-up near the top of the building, SILVER.
She stepped out of the car holding onto her handbag. She got a weird feeling about the place, how would she ever find her way around without the kind of help she got last time?
