The trapdoor

'May-maybe we should go home too.'Misty shivered. her teeth chattered. She was shivering, though it wasn't cold at all. After all, all the windows are perfectly sealed inside for insulation. It was like an icy dome had been automatically placed once they had arrived inside. She didn't understand her body at all, her insides were burning, and her back was sweating from the intense heat from inside, but her mouth was freezing, and her teeth were suddenly turning sensitive. Her eyes were puffy, and she stood there, very still like she was just another piece of wood inside this room.

'Oh hell no, we are not going anywhere.' Belle scoffed. Her breath was so thick, you could see the puff of air leaving her mouth. 'Are you kidding me? I didn't come all this way to 'give up' because of some old on-and-off trick from horror movies. Besides, these are all cliches. Except for the furniture, I like the style.' she clicked. 'I came here to find and solve the mystery like any good explorer would. I'm not going to leave until I find something useful.' she stood on her toes.

'we all know how you are when you want to find something.' Misty mumbled under her breath.

'what was that?'

'Uhh, it's nothing, Belle. But I really think we should-'

'No.' and crossed her arms.

Misty felt something rise inside of her. it wasn't heat or the coldness, no. It was something that had been building inside of her for a long time, bubbling, building up the pressure to explode when it reached its tipping point. She took a deep breath in, and a deep breath out. A few deep breaths and counting to ten always work. She wasn't going to burst, not this time.

'What if someone is here, you know because the chandeliers are on?' she inquired, trying to knock some sense into her sister.

'Hmmm...we could hide if we find that someone or some kind of threat is coming after us.' she shrugged.

'I don't know if that's the right thing to do...' she gulped.

'Ah, I'm sure it's nothing, you're always afraid of something.' Belle cut her off.

'I think Artemis is right, you should really get out of here as soon as you guys can because it looks like there have been some records of trafficking of illegal goods around this mansion. and it was a hideout for some wanted criminals for a long time. It might be a meeting place for thieves or any other kinds of miscreants.' Baker replied. He was listening to the sisters' whole conversation, and everything the dirthead said just didn't make sense.

'...' She stayed silent for a long time, and BAker sensed that she is convinced or at least scared that something dangerous might happen to two girls alone on a hundred-year-old abandoned mansion.

But he was wrong.

'Who?'

'What do you mean who?'

'Who's Arti-mees?' she asked. Baker sighed. She has to be the person with the thickest skull to really ask who the guy was when there was literally only one guy with them in the mansion.

'Artemis. You know, the one who smashed the grandfather clock, the guy who came to search for this sister? Did you seriously just join him in your group and not introduce yourself?' he asked agitated.

'Oh that guy, yeah the way he fell on his face was pretty funny.' she chuckled. Baker realized she was stalling. She does that when she has nothing useful or sensible to say back.

'Belle, he had a major concussion and by the looks of that wound, he might need some stitches.' he responded. He was quite agitated that she had the ability to laugh at someone's pain. She did the same when Misty fell and broke her leg a year ago. Misty never forgot that day, sometimes she's a wench.

'It was his choice to come with. Besides, he was the one who fell, by accident. It's not like I pushed him, so chill.' she rolled her eyes.

'Ok, I'm going to open the trapdoor, this time without Artimees and his dramatic sister, so here we gooo...' she clapped.

They rushed towards the silver door, now clearly visible even under piles of dirt and furniture, her heart was pounding with every step.

Misty didn't like the idea, but what choice did she have? She prayed as she walked further around the huge dining table under the chandelier. They had to crawl under the dining table, beautifully covered in a clean white cloth, which was quite opaque, so she couldn't see it until she went under the table. She did admire Belle for her super-sight. She could spot something from miles away.

'Oh my god, I can't.' she sucked in her breath. Misty stumbled under the table, unable to breathe without filtering the dust in her nose. How could someone enter this house even?? She screamed internally.

'Ok, on the count of three.'

'mhm.'

'One.' Baker waited impatiently, he could finally start playing Gash when she leaves.

'Two.' Misty wondered if there are actually mutants inside. After all, this trapdoor existed. This is the only answer to the truth. she gulped.

'thr-'

'I want...attendance.' There was a voice, deep down inside.

Belle's voice got trapped in her throat. There was really someone inside!

'Did you open it? What's inside?' Baker asked, breaking the silence.

'Sssh....there's someone inside.' she finally responded.

'What?!' Misty hissed.

She put her ear on the trapdoor, trying to make sense of what is going on inside. Was it another trap or puzzle of some sort?

A faint woman's voice was to be heard. She sounded harsh and angry, her voice getting louder and louder every second. The hissing and clanging were to be heard clearly. Some slow tapping was to be heard from inside.

'Oh my god, what do we do?' Misty panicked.

'Quick, hide!' she instructed, and they both scurried out of the table.

There was a little creak and the lady's voice was better to be heard in the distance.

'I don't care if his dog died, that is not a valid reason to not come!' she shouted over the phone.

'I want to go home.' Misty winced.
