(Vol 1) Who Knew (1 Month Earlier)

It all started when my Mum told us she had amazing news.

"We're moving!" she said excitedly.

I instantly felt sick. Why would she just go through with moving without speaking to us as a family? She even had the decency to go to my Grandparents and tell them we were moving. Safe to say my Grandmother wasn't happy about the brief notice. Mum hadn't spoken to her about it either. I remember the look on my Grandmother's face: sadness, hurt, anger. As for my Dad, well, even he didn't have a clue about it until yesterday! He was fuming. He went on a rant about her doing things behind his back. So yeah, he wasn't happy either.

Lockie didn't know what was going on. All he knew was that there was a tense atmosphere between all the family and that we would soon have a new house, but he too didn't know where. Lockie is my little brother; he is 12; he is 5 years younger than me. From that, I'm sure you can work out how old I am.

"Come on, Kil! We need to load the car" Lockie shouted as he flung open my bedroom door.

"I'll be down soon, just give me a minute," I replied bluntly.

He walked out without a reply while I stood and stared at my old empty room. I didn't want to leave, but I guess I had to. 'My name is Killian Saunders, welcome to my miserable life.' I thought.

As I walked to the car, I saw my Grandparents standing on the grass. My friends and Lockie's stood there also. All these people we had to say goodbye to. I needed to sort this out; where were we going and why?

"Killian," my Grandmother sighed. I turned to look at her as I was passing Lockie my bags.

"How are you feeling? Do you know where you're going?" She questioned, whilst slowly walking towards me. I shrugged.

"Not good. I don't want to leave, Gran. Mum still has mentioned nothing." I trailed off.

"Do you know anything?"

My Grandmother glanced over to see if my Mum was watching. She wasn't. She leaned over my shoulder.

"She has a fresh job. She got told by her manager she is being promoted in her role in Florida," she whispered.

I looked at my Grandmother and became confused. I don't understand why she would hide that from her family. Surely it would be a good thing. Unless she is hiding something far worse? Could she be having an affair? Change in a job role to something less professional? I needed to find out.

"Erm... I'm confused" I said with a puzzled look on my face. But before my Grandmother could finish.

"Kil? Are you ready, darling?" my Mum shouted from the car.

"Yes Mum, I'll be there in a minute," I answered.

I looked back at my Grandmother, who let on a slight smile. It kind of made me feel a little at ease, but I felt a little off. She gave a slight gesture to tell me to go. I smiled back and hugged her.

"I'll speak to you soon about it Gran or I may find out for myself," I chuckled.

"Call me anytime you can for a chat. I'll miss you all! Let me know how everything goes," she replied. I nodded.

I slowly turned my back to her. My feet felt heavy as I couldn't help but drag them across the grass. I just felt so overwhelmed by finding all this out yesterday then the next, the house is empty. I stumbled into the back seat of the car next to Lockie and placed my seatbelt over my shoulder.

"We will be ok Killian. I promise," Chirped Lockie.

I couldn't help but to put my hood up and slouch into the seat. I couldn't wave goodbye; it was too painful. It was too hard to bear seeing everyone upset whilst waving us off.

Before I knew it, my Mum reversed from the drive and headed onto the road. I look to my right and Lockie had a cheerful look on his face. I turned to look out of the window and placed my earphones into my ears. Maybe a bit of rock would soothe me.

The sun was shining; the trees were swaying in the summer breeze. I couldn't help but stare and think about how beautiful my hometown is.

'What is our new house going to look like?'

'What are the people going to be like?' I thought.
