Testing

Back to Wren's POV:

Apollo came to my room later to fetch me for the testing. He still looked like shit, but I didn't ask him about it. Something told me he wouldn't want to talk about it.

We walked quietly, to a part of the mansion I hadn't been to before. I saw other people with their mentors walking in the same direction. People were talking amongst each other, mainly about what was to happen during the test. I look up at Apollo.

"Apollo..." I start.

He looks at me, waiting for me to continue.

"What will happen to me if...if I don't pass?" I say quietly.

He clenches his jaw. "You'll pass." He says, staring straight ahead.

"But what if I don't?" I ask, getting nervous.

He stops walking and glares at me. "Nothing is gonna happen because you're going to pass."

I bite my bottom lip and stare at the ground. "I want to go home..." I say, my voice trembling slightly. I couldn't cry. Not here. Not now.

Apollo does something I never would have thought he would do. He pulls me into a hug. I tense, surprised, before relaxing into him.

I buried my head into his chest as tears threatened to fall. "I'm sorry..." I choke out. "I..I shouldn't be crying..."

He just rubs my back. "Wren. You are going to pass. I'm sure of it. There's nothing to be afraid of." He pulls back and looks me in my eyes. "Ok?"

I nod, and we continue walking towards the testing area.

Once we arrive, Apollo gives them our names and they usher us into a large gymnasium like room. Apollo sends me to stand in a line with everyone else who was getting tested and than went to go sit with the other mentors.

We had been standing there for nearly 30 minutes, a hushed murmur over everyone, before the Boss game into the gymnasium. To my surprise, he wasn't being tailed by Luna, who seemed to accompany him everywhere he went.

He nodded to the mentors before turning towards the large group of recruits. "Hello everyone!" He said with a smirk that made my skin crawl.

"As you all know, you have come together today to be tested for your physical and mental durability." His eyes skim over all of us, seeming to pause for a moment on me before continuing.

"The field in which you will be working for will be brutal, and mistakes will lead to death." He begins to walk towards us. "With that said...run!" He smirks.

People look around, confused. Run where? Our mentors and the Boss just watched. A couple people started running around the gymnasium, and a large majority of the group started following suit.

Only a couple of us stayed standing where we were. I notice Thomas from training all those months ago, and Nyx, along with 5 other people.

Nyx and Thomas walk over to me, eyeing the mentors. They had started getting to their feet, which was odd.

The Boss' grin grew bigger as he watched those of us who hadn't started running around the gym.

"Wren...I think we should leave the room." Nyx whispers, not looking at me.

I nod and Thomas agrees with me. "Do we just...sprint for it?" Thomas asks.

Nyx nods. "He did say to run."

We exchange a glance before darting from the gym. Only a couple of seconds after we had bolted from the gym, the screams started. I could hear footsteps behind us, and only ran harder, taking turns and stairs and hoping I wouldn't run to a dead end. Something told me that getting caught was not an option.
