Chapter Twenty - Four

September 10, 1835

“Milly, you’ll always be honest with me. Correct?” Caroline queries, as Milly does her hair.

“Yes of course, My Lady. Why do you ask such a question?-”

“It has occurred to me that the people here do not treat me with the respect that they should of a Countess, and in turn give that respect to Lady Castella. Why is that so?”

“My lady, all of us respect you-” Caroline interrupts her. “Milly you just said that you wouldn't lie to me.” Milly lets out a sigh. “Some see Lady Castella more like the Countess than you see as she is currently running the estate in your stead, and there is no current plan for you to work on taking on your duties. Perhaps you should talk to the Count about your position here.” Milly finishes doing Caroline’s braid. “That’s a splendid idea. I think I will.”

That evening Caroline finds herself in the library, hoping to run into the Count. She waits for an hour or so but he is no where to be found. Giving up for the day, she goes to leave, as she does Cecile opens the door.

"Cecile! I was hoping to run into you. I had a few things I wanted to discuss with you."

"What is it?"

"I wanted to talk about my duties. And we'll why I am not performing them-"

"You aren't ready yet." He says walking over to a book shelf, she follows.

"Perhaps if I take a few more lessons from Vivian, I could take on a few duties at least." Caroline says, hope filling her voice.

"Oh, were you not informed? The Viscountess has passed."

"S-she what? How? What happened-"

"On her way home from the estate, she got into a carriage incident. One of the horses was spooked by something, and they fell off the road. I'm told it was painless though. She died almost instantly."

"Oh dear, when is the funeral?"

"I'm afraid that it has already been held. I thought someone would have let you know, I guess it must've slipped their minds." He says, his voice as cold and icy as ever.

"I-I'll excuse myself." The count waves her off, and goes back to his book. Caroline runs out of the room, tears fall from eyes, not having a place in mind her feet move on their own. She stops in front of a large brown door. She knocks, and the door opens.

"Caroline? What are you doing here at this hour?" Sir. Elton asks. Caroline throws her arms around him, she buries her head in his chest. "She's dead…"

"What?" Caroline looks up at him, tears falling from her face, he whips them away, and their lips meet.
