[The InterContinental Hotel]
When Bob returned from the reception counter, he found Jackie staring out the ceiling-to-floor glass wall. He couldn’t help smiling as he gazed at her alone at the table in deep thought.
It was understandable, after the traumatic experience of seeing a man beaten up. But she managed quite well and even jumped to his defense, he thought.
“Are you feeling better now?” Bob asked, placing his hand over hers.
She looked at his bruised knuckles and gazed at him.
“Where did you learn to fight like that?”
Bob smiled awkwardly. It was never his intention to hurt anyone and he mainly practiced Muay Thai as a way to keep fit these days, though he had competed in his youth. Of course, it came in handy for just such an occasion.
“Nah, he was drunk. Anyone could have taken him down…” Bob replied. Then seeing Jackie expecting more of an answer, he added, “I’ve been practicing Thai Boxing since I was a kid. It keeps me fit.”
