Thana was of course not the type to listen to anyone and despite Noah's cold eyes and everyone's nervous gazes she calmly sat down in the conference hall and listened to Emanuel's report on the new case.
"Our new case is serial murders. 7 victims so far, all women with the appearance of early 20-ies, all supernatural creatures.
All killed in their own homes on earth. Their bodies have been dismembered and scattered throughout the house. All the victims went on a date before their death."
After Emanuel finished his part Sophie took over and continued.
"First victim, Amanda Crow. She is an elf, raised in an orphanage after the tragic death of her parents at the age of 7. Her friends claim she was on a date with a guy she met on a dating app. We have yet to identify the guy, but as Amanda told her friends after the date he was charming, tall, blond with green eyes.
Second victim, Simons James. She is a veterinarian and a beastkin. Also an orphan. She was also on a date the day she died, but in her description, the guy was of normal height, brown hair, and blue eyes.
Third victim, Joanna Roth. Orphaned witch, with the same date story, different appearance…"
As Emanuel and Sophie introduced one victim after another, Thana picked up her phone and got busy with something else.
This didn't go unnoticed by Noah and he almost couldn't hold back the urge to flip out.
Seeing his state Thana only smiled brighter making Noah angrier.
After the briefing was over Noah assigned everyone their works while hinting Thana and Ash to follow him. They arrived on earth through the teleport and got in Noah's car.
"Where are we going?" Asked Thana as they sat in Noah's car.
"To the 3rd victim's crime scene. She was a member of the fire witch coven. She didn't have a blood-related family, but witches don't forgive. They will be looking for vengeance no matter the cost."
"And you hope to gain some time from the coven head before they start burning everything to the ground?"
"Something like that, but that's not all. Witches are good at looking for things as well as people."
"The killer is smart, he won't leave anything behind that could be used against himself." Said Thana.
"Everyone makes mistakes…"
"Beep, beep."
Noah's words were interrupted by Thana's phone and even an idiot could tell he wasn't happy about it.
Thana checked the phone, smiled, typed something back then put away her phone.
"Something good happened?" Asked Noah noticing her cheerful mood.
"I wonder."
Her reckless answer brought only a headache to him. Soon they pulled up to an apartment complex where the victim lived and died.
Earthly police were stationed there. After Noah pulled out his badge the group went in without hindrance, but not before eyeing them with strange eyes, especially Thana.
The trio looked around the apartment, checking for any details that might have been missed or neglected. During the process Thana's eyes suddenly lit up and it didn't go unnoticed.
"Did you find anything?" Asked Noah.
"I'm not sure yet. I'm done here for now, shall we go to meet the witches?'
Noah didn't press hef for the answer and just walked out of the apartment.
Witches of the fire coven didn't live too far away and the trio arrived in their village in 20 minutes.
Their arrival wasn't greeted with hospitality and the witches soon informed the head witch.
The head witch of the fire coven was called Lola. She was a powerful and old witch whose hair had already turned gray after hundreds of years. She had sharp brown eyes.
5 minutes later Lola walked out in a black old-fashioned dress with the help of a cane. Behind her followed other witches with protectiveness and hostility.
"What have you come here for?" Asked the woman.
"I am Noah Piralli, I am the captain of the special force that is investigating Joanna Roth's murder." His words weren't finished yet as the trio felt the hostility directed at them increase significantly.
"What do you want from us? We already answered all the questions." Said the head witch.
"I am not here to ask questions, just to ask you not to seek your own vengeance and let us do our work." Said Noah.
"If that's all you may leave." Said Lola and turned around.
"Three days." A clear and beautiful voice halted her.
"What?"
"On the third day from here we will give you Joanna's body, to bury her with your customs but before that don't interfere." Said Thana.
Lola's sharp eyes fell on Thana trying to figure her out. She felt immense pressure when observing this person and this long-forgotten feeling scared and excited her a bit.
"You sure are familiar with our customs. Tell me why should I believe you?"
"You can choose not to, but you don't have that luxury."
"Hmm?"
"You won't be able to get Joanna's body till the investigation is fully closed and by that time you are risking missing the right time for the ceremony and burial. I don't need to tell you what you will lose in that case."
As Thana's words fell everyone became quiet and the situation quickly turned awkward.
"Fine, but we will only give 3 days."
"Deal."
After the trio left the premises the trio returned to the headquarters where everyone from the team gathered. Finally, Noah couldn't hold back.
"Why did you promise them that you will return the body in three days?"
"Because no matter what happens Joanna deserves proper burial according to her customs. The killer already robbed her of the life you can't let him rob her of the afterlife with her ancestors." Said Thana.
"What do you mean?"
"Witches have customs regarding the burials. They differ from coven to coven and the traditions are closely protected from outsiders. If the traditions are not fulfilled in the case of a witch's death they won't be able to move to the afterlife, their soul will be tormented and dismembered for a long period of time and the coven will be punished for not upholding their part of the job."
Thana's explanation puzzled and surprised everyone including Ash. Noah could no longer blame her for the actions after understanding the matter and decided to concentrate on the matter at hand.
