Benedict School for Girls
"Norah! Wait for me."
The blonde haired girl in navy school uniform looked back when her friend called her. People said that her blue eyes were the exact color as her brother's, it was as clear as the blue sky.
She was quite tall for her age, 5'6 inches and in a great shape from being part of a marathon club in school. Her face was considered attractive, with chubby cheeks and dimples on both side, she looked cute when she smiled.
"Oh, come on Gabby. I'm famished! Hmmm.. I'm thinking what will be the menu for today."
Gabby, short for Gabriella, was her roommate as well as her classmate. She was kind of heavyset and petite but had the most friendly smile that could make everyone happy, Norah teased her that was her magic smile.
Her bestfriend was also slow like a snail. That was why Norah had walked ten steps out of the classroom while Gabby was still zipping her bag. Sometimes her slowness made Norah irritated, particularly when it was time to eat.
"Norah, do you confident enough with your answers? It was the last exam so I kinda afraid what the results would be."
"Don't worry, my friend. We already did our best. Let's just hope for the good results and forget it for a while. I really need something to eat to release our stress and negative energy."
Norah took her hand and urged her to walk faster. When they walked side by side, people could easily tell who was Norah and who was Gabriella. They were very different from each other.
"So you will go home by the end of this week? You don't want to wait until our graduation?" Gabby asked with mouth full of broccoli.
"I'll be here for the graduation but I can't wait to see my brother." Norah drank her milk, already finished with her meals.
"Which one? Your brother or stepbrother?" Her smile full of secret.
"Gabby! How many times have I told you? He's not my stepbrother." Norah pouted with a blush.
"Ok, ok he is not. You are his secret admire."
Norah shushed her friend, her eyes looked around the crowded cafetaria, afraid someone might hear their conversation. As if the person of their topic could pop out.
Only Gabriella knew her secret, not even her own brother knew about it. That she loved the man who'd rescued her when she was a little girl, shaking and crying in Noah's arms trying to protect her, but he too was only a small child at that time.
She was only six years old when her stepmother threw them out with little money to survive, said they were only a burden. Their drunkard abusive father didn't care about them, his job was drinking and beating them, so they never went back to that house and survived on the streets. For two days, they managed to eat cheap breads and slept at abandoned buildings.
When they saw police, they always ran and hide because they were afraid the police will take them back to that horrible house just to suffer another abuse. But on third days living at streets, a gang of thug started beating them and robbed the little money they had.
That was when Xander, like an Archangel, came into their lives. With just one hard stare and his presence alone, the street thugs scuttled away. He was renowned in the area as the deadly gang leader's second in command. He took them to lived with his friends, they were all homeless too and welcomed the young members as their own family.
Noah was only ten years old but in order to survive this cruel world, he joined Xander. Norah was too small to understand what his job was, but later she knew that Xander helped criminal organization, like illegal operations and such. Noah always shielded the facts from her little sister.
Xander started to operate his own legal business and left the underworld business. He built his own kingdom from the bottom, with a little help of his ex crime lord. Several of his subordinates came with him, including Noah and his little sister.
With an excelent business mind, he had become a young billionaire. Noah and Norah were living in comfort when he rescued them, but now they lived beyond comfort. Xander was not a stingy boss, he gave the best for people who'd loyal to him.
"Hello, anybody there?" Gabby snapped her fingers in front of Norah's eyes.
Norah laughed, "Gabby, are you done? I even fell asleep from waiting you."
"That's daydream, Norah. Thinking about your step… your crush?"
"Huh! I'm not talking to you anymore, Gabby."
Norah walked away and Gabby chased her from behind. With a full stomach, she could function her brain to packed her things from the room. Five days later, Norah was almost finished with packing her things, Gabby sat in tears because she already grew close to Norah for two years being her roommate.
"I can't imagine we're finally not students anymore. We would keep in touch right, Gabby?" Norah held her hands.
Sobbing, Gabby said, "If only papa didn't dead set on my study abroad, I won't leave you, Norah. What about you apply to the same university? We could rent an appartment together."
"What? I couldn't afford to study at that expensive college especially with this brain of mine. In fact, I don't know if I wanted to study at the university."
Norah was not super smart, she was just an average student with luck by having Gabby, the straight A student as her roommate. So if she didn't understand something, she could ask Gabby.
"Yeah yeah I know. Your dream is to build a family with your step.. your savior."
Norah blushed, "Stop it, Gabby. I don't even know if he likes me or not. He is so cold towards me, so it is just an unrequited love."
"Don't lose hope Norah, maybe someday he will see you as a woman."
Norah had counted every woman Xander dated in the past, hoping for a moment Xander would glance her way when she returned for holidays, but he never gave a slightest interest in her way.
Norah sighed, "Yeah, maybe someday."
