Chapter 18
End
It had been a month since the funeral. A month since I saw Mr. and Mrs. Mack. A month since I saw her face for the last time. A month since I had been to work. A month since I had seen anyone.
Maddie moved in with Sandra, they would come to the door but I would just stand and wait for them to leave.
Since the funeral, I had been feeling not only down, but sick, the rash had gotten worse as well as I stared to get sick, maybe I caught something while living with the Macks? Or this is grief taking over my body, sighing as I knew I had to see the doctor sometime before I got worse.
Getting up, I slowly go dressed, I hadn't really been out since the funeral, this was the first time I would be talking to someone other than the walls.
Making my way to my car, I opened it, as I drove to the hospital, I was going to see Dr. Osborn, he said if I ever needed help I could come to him, well I hope he is not busy. Pulling up to hospital, my stomach dropped as I remembered the last time I was here. Making my way into the building, I went to the floor he was one, as if he knew I was coming, I bumped into him.
"Jamie! So good to see you. How can I help?"
"I need a check up, I have been getting sick lately, as well as pain, dizziness, a bit of a fever here and there, a rash but that is more like red spots, I have been losing weight for the past 3 months-
"How long has this been going on?"
"Since July."
Dr. Osborn gave me a look as he walked us to the elevator, he pushed a floor number, I didn't know what was wrong but we came to the floor where they do blood tests. We went to a room as I was told to sit down.
He cleaned my arm, drawing a bit of blood, as I sat wondering what was he thiking I had?
"Dr.?"
"Sorry, I have a… I just wanted to run a blood test, this should be the most accurate to tell what is wrong."
"What should I do while we wait?"
"Go get some rest, I will phone you in the morning with the results as they may take some time." He gave a small smile, walking to get something out of the draw, he had his hands behind his back as he gave me
"A lollipop? What am I? 5?"
"For not screaming when I drew the blood, I give it all the time."
Laughing as I took the lollipop from the doctor, as we walked with me back to my car. He opened the door for me.
I got in the car, he closed it.
"How are you?"
"I'm a doctor, I can't really get time to grieve as much as I want to, but I am thankful I have something to keep my mind off it. How are you? Wrote the book?"
"Well, other than the sick feeling, I guess I am ok. I have been wanting to finish the book but every time I look at the laptop, I just start to cry. So I probably wont ever write it."
He smiled
"I will call you in the morning, have a good day."
"You to."
I pulled out the lot as I saw Dr. Osborn wave me off, I took a detour to my house, I thought I would see if Sandra was working. Coming up to the store, I saw the blonde standing outside with Maddie, they were laughing about something. I smiled seeing Maddie laugh, she always needed someone in her life to make her feel loved, more loved than I could ever make her feel, and Sandra made her happy, I could see it. Looking away, I began to cry, seeing them together made me remember what Avery said to me the day she was told she had a week. She wanted to be a normal couple, but she knew we could never be that, I wish I could have given her that. I wish I gave her more than I did.
I got home as I made my way to sit on the couch, looking at the floor as I remembered that night we spent here, the feelings I felt in the moment with her, her body, her touch, her eyes gazing into mine, her. I lay on the couch as I was to numb to go to bed, more tears began to fall as I remembered everything of Avery.
I miss you Avery. I hope your happier now that they pain has stopped.
I must have fallen asleep on the couch because I woke up to the sun being in my eyes, the curtains in my room are never opened so I knew I was on the couch, as I sat up I heard my back crack.
"OW! I must never sleep here again-
My phone was ringing, I picked it up seeing who It was, it was Dr. Osborn
"Hello."
"Jamie, good morning, I hope you slept well, I have your results."
"Slept fine, actually for a good few hours, may I know what the hell is wrong with me?"
"Jamie, I don't know how to say this to you-
"What? Is it flu? Cold? Pink eye?"
"Jamie...I'm sorry but… the blood test I took was for cancer, you...you have leukemia...i am so sorry"
Dr. Osborn's voice faded as I forgot where I was in the moment. I bit my lip as more tears feel. Avery had said to me a long time ago, she will never believe me when I say that I understand her pain until I have cancer. She must have been playing God when she said that.
I have cancer, I can treat it and get better but odds are I'll die. All I can think now is, I will see my mother again, I will see her again, the pain will go as well as I will. I know this is not how I wanted my story to end but, this is what Avery ment when she said we will meet again.
And we will.
