[Time of day is now Night.]
[New Mission Added: {"Night of the Living Dead}]
Kaz turned on his lights throughout his complex including his light walls, expecting to see hordes of husks, but saw nothing. Everything was strangely quiet, so quiet that he could hear his own heartbeat. He then heard a turret go off once and a quiet screech, then quiet again. After a short period of silence, as in response to the single screech heard, there was another screech, then another ,and another, then a dozen more, there were so many loud screeches at once thatKaz felt like his head would explode from the noise until the noise settled down somewhat.
His turrets started to fire as he pulled up his railgun and peered through the scope at the edge of the light from his light walls. After a few seconds, the turrets picked up their firing and the husks started to appear, sprinting in a ghastly form, tripping over each other, some holding their hands in front of their eyes. Kaz locked in on one and fired, his bullet course correcting in the air went straight through the throat hitting its nexus gland killing it immediately. He scoped in on another, fired his shot, switched to another and fired. His shots all hit their target.
His pit traps were finally reached by the husks impaling them and slowly draining their energy. This was the first bottleneck for the waves of enemies, the turrets were keeping them at bay as they filled the pits with their dead bodies, and Kaz taking shits into the crowd as well.
[New Skill Acquired: {Basic Rifle Mastery lvl. 1}]
[This skill improves your tactical and innate abilities when it comes to shooting rifles, allowing you to better assess bullet paths and time to hit to help you land your bullets from even further away. Leveling this skill allows you to better comprehend these factors as well as improve your mobility with your weapon.]
'This skill almost seems redundant with my bullets.'
Kaz sighed as he scoped back in and continued firing, feeling more sure of his shots now. He continued to observe the wave of enemies, thinking his defense may have been overkill as the final few husks were taken care of.
"Was that it? It's been like 30 minutes, I thought I would be here longer."
Even though there were occasional shots still firing, the horde disappeared. Kaz sat down in a chair in his sniper's nest, not trusting enough of the situation to leave things unwatched. Kaz for once, actually felt thirsty and brought out a container of water anticipating thirst to set in first. He gulped down a litter from his metal container before stashing it back in his inventory and set back.
He opened up his mission list to verify that the mission was still in progress, which it was.
'I don't think this is quite over yet, I should wait', he thought to himself.
He continued to observe the silent darkness peering through his scope every now and then only to see nothing change. An hour passes with nothing happening before Kaz decides to sit back. He started thinking of Earth, yes he wanted to make things better there, but that change wouldn't have amounted to anything in the grand scheme of the universe. But he didn't really care for the universe as much as he wished, he only cared about her and her dream.
Kaz delved into a memory of when he was an orphan with, he was in a small cramped room by himself when he heard a knock on the door before a young girl came in.
"Hey Kaz, I snuck you some supper hehe." said the Girl.
"Rika! You shouldn't have, he will get mad at you too if he finds out you helped me again!"
Kaz surprised by Rika's actions made him secretly happy, Rika was the type of girl to care about everyone else before herself. Kaz on the other hand thought people should worry about themselves.
Rika sat down on the bed next to Kaz and put the plate on his lap.
"Just be quiet and eat your food ya dummy."
Then with a bang the door opened and startled Kaz awake. It wasn't the dream, but a turret firing. He stood up quickly looking out into the darkness again and he saw it, a slightly bulkier husk running towards the pit falls, but instead of falling in like the rest, it hurled itself across the pit landing on the other side clumsily and started to wade through the barbed wires only to hae its energy drained by them. Kaz narrowed his eyes.
'Not good, one got over the pitfall trap.'
Kaz picked up his rifle again and looked through the scope just as another wave of screeches reached his ears causing him to grimace. The next wave came into view as his defenses began to rain bullets on them as well as Kaz joining in with shots of his own.
[Skill Level up: {Basic Rifle Mastery lvl. 2}]
His speed of finding his targets increased as well as his firerate, killing more and more husks. The husks at this point completely filled the pitfalls with their remains and were now swarming the barbed wire and starting to climb over each other, Kaz continued to pick the closest ones off, as well as the ones using the corpses to run over the barbed wire.
'Shit this is getting bad, they will reach the walls soon.'
Kaz starts to sprint to the wall, his heartbeat pounded in his ears, nearly drowning out the mechanical symphony of the turrets firing at the relentless tide of husks approaching his defenses. He reached the ground level, where the pitfall traps were filled with the unmoving bodies of husks, an eerie stillness amidst the chaos. The barbed wires were nearing their limit, burdened with the weight of countless husks pushing forward with a mindless determination.
Kaz moved to the last line of defense, the light wall. He lifted his railgun and took aim, firing into the oncoming wave of husks. Each pull of the trigger brought down a husk, yet it felt futile as more of them continued to advance, an endless sea of figures in the moonlit night.
He fired, again and again, a steady rhythm in the chaotic landscape. In the back of his mind, a calculator ticked off the decreasing distance, a constant reminder of the impending breach.
The first husk reached the wall, a moment marked with a heavy sense of inevitability. Kaz stood firm, his figure a solitary silhouette against the light wall, the warm glow a stark contrast to the cold, mindless eyes of the husks.
He could hear the system notifications chiming in, a calm yet urgent reminder of the situation. But Kaz focused on firing his weapon, each shot a declaration of his determination to stand his ground, to protect what he built from the encroaching darkness.
As he pulled the trigger one final time, reality set in, the husks were at the wall, the last barrier between them and him. Kaz stashed his rail gun and pulled out his spear.
'So much for this seeming easy.'
