Chapter 6

“What’s up, Carmen?” She leaned back in her chair, hands in her lap.

I took a deep breath and tried again. “Nel, the last time I was on the bus with you, you did something weird and it just wasn’t like you, or at least, what little I know of you. I mean, you’re the best driver I’ve ever seen on the route, and when you slammed on the brakes like that, I was surprised. Sure, shit happens sometimes, like people running out into the road or cars stopping suddenly. But I realized it had happened right after I’d been talking to my friend John about my ex, Patty. I remember glancing over at you, and you were blushing and avoiding my gaze. Did I embarrass you or something? Or were you offended because you found out I might be gay?”
