Chapter 35

“I think she could do with a new hairstyle,” Sarah said. “That one went out with bustles.”

“What’s that?”

“See, I said you were young.”

Vera slapped her friend lightly on her arm. “I suppose Lansing’s an efficient secretary, or seems to be. Runs the office—”

“And rings around the two men. Don’t know how they’d manage without her—”

“She could use a bit of makeup, though. It wouldn’t kill her.” Vera blushed. “God, that was nasty.”

“Good for you. It’s hell being out here on this limb by myself. Besides, maybe I’m not who I say I am after all.”

“You mean you might really be Sarah, the other twin sister you call a bitch? It’s all so confusing.”

“Tell me about it. I don’t have it straight most of the time. Just call me Sarah/April then you’ll be half right.” She laughed. “In a way I’m beginning to think it doesn’t matter who I am long as I’m happy.”

“And are you?”

“I think I could be.”

“You don’t sound very sure.”
