Chapter 17

“I do want a family some day,” he said, “but I want to adopt. I don’t want to have kids the other way.” We both shuddered at the thought and laughed.

The topic turned from ourselves to the gay community in general. We talked about what challenges we faced and how we might overcome them. It wouldn’t be easy, but now Kalil and I could at least confide in each other. We even made a pact that if things got really bad, we would both run away to New York City or San Francisco or somewhere more friendly than this uptight little town. When it was time for me to leave, we hugged and swore to keep each other’s secret.

That night I set aside money in a jar and vowed to keep putting away more to pay for the trip
