Chapter 18

“That’s because he’s not an obnoxious little girl!” Kalil said before closing the door.

I snickered. “Maybe you should just put a sign on the door that says ‘No girls allowed.’”

“I had one, when I was ten,” Kalil said. “Last time we moved my parents made me throw it away because it was immature.”

“Yikes.” There were some days I couldn’t decide who was worse, Dad or Kalil’s father. Dad could rant for hours, but all Kalil’s father had to do was put Kalil down with just the right words and Kalil would feel guilty for weeks.

I reluctantly returned home to avoid further interrupted moments. Dad tried to pick a fight with me for spending so much time at Kalil’s when I could be picking up more shifts at work, but I just walked past him and into my room. My phone buzzed before I could even flop onto my bed.

It was a text from Kalil. U want 2 get ice cream 2mrw? Ur free in the afternoon, right?
