Approximately two minutes later Richter exited the rear area of the bakery and made a presence. He had flour on his arms and chin. He stood under the sign that read Employees Only,steered his view from the left to right, and asked, “Did we just have a customer?”

Hayden said, “No. Some man was trying to sell something.”

“Like what?”

“Jewelry or something like that. I’m not really sure.” The lie slipped out of Hayden’s lips with ease. If anything in his eighteen years, he had learned how to lie. Most people believed he was straight and always honest, but that wasn’t so. If those certain people only knew the real Hayden Mitchell, they probably wouldn’t have liked him since he could drum up a pretty believable story on the spot.

“Did you make signs for the Brazil nut tea bread?”

“I’m working on it.”

“I need them put in the case before you leave.”
