One of Hayden’s duties was to please the client according to his two bosses. David insisted that he be pleasant and surefooted. And it was Richter who told him, “Always make eye contact with the patrons. Don’t let a single one of them leave without paying the slightest attention to them. Remember that they are feeding us.”


So Hayden decided to be pleasant, confident, and paid close attention to the Russian man at the glass case. The tasks were not work, of course, since he admired the older gentleman as soon as he walked into the bakery.
