Chapter 9

“Every couple of months. One more reason I couldn’t be a Ranger anymore.” His voice was a hoarse mumbled whisper.

I sat on the floor next to the bed for a while, listening. His breathing sounded strained, but it was fairly even. Eventually I got up and checked the clock in my bedroom. It said 4:13. I made what might be a rash but merciful decision. I texted Caldwell and said I was taking a sick day. I took them so rarely I figured my boss would be unlikely to give me any flack after all the shit that had happened yesterday. I didn’t think Brendan was likely to be in any shape to play bodyguard a few hours from now. I also noticed the ache in my hip from where I fell. We were a pathetic pair. 4

I had my laptop on the kitchen table, checking my email, when Brendan came in. To say he looked rough was rather an understatement. I’d seen guys look more chipper with massive hangovers. I’d heard the shower about half an hour ago.

“It’s quarter to noon,” he said.
