Chapter 13

“Good evening, Lucy.” He glanced at the chocolate and then returned his attention to Lucy. “Would you like to come in?”

Lucy peered over his shoulder then shook her head.

“No,” she said, holding the chocolate out to him. “I’ve just come to apologise for my behaviour the other day. It was rude and I’m sorry.”

“There’s no need to apologise,” said Julian, feeling guilty for assuming the worst of Lucy. “Are you sure you won’t come in?”

Lucy shook her head a second time and thrust the chocolate at Julian, who finally accepted it

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” said Lucy. “On the street. I’m sorry. Good night.”

She hurried down the corridor to the stairwell, leaving Julian standing with a fortnight’s worth of chocolate rations. He shrugged, closed the door and put the chocolate on the small counter by the sink. He hadn’t finished dinner yet and didn’t want to spoil his appetite. Food was too hard to come by to have to throw it away.
