Chapter 14

He screwed up the paper he’d wrapped his sandwiches in, along with the paper bag which had contained his lunch, into a ball and deposited it in a nearby rubbish receptacle. When he returned, he made sure he sat a little further around where the cameras couldn’t see him.

“Where are you, Taal?” he asked under his breath.

He heard a noise beside him. His heart fluttered as he looked up, but it was no one he recognised.

The man looked surprised to find anyone else so far away from the Day Seven crowds.

“What are you doing here?” he asked in an accusing tone. “So close to the perimeter fence?”

“Eating my lunch,” Julian replied.

“Why here?”

“I like to look out at the forest. There’s nothing wrong with that, is there?”

The man eyed him a little longer before looking away. “No, there isn’t.”

“It’s just a restful view. A nice change of scenery.”

The man nodded. “I guess it is.” He stepped forward, glanced down at Julian and nodded again. “I’ll leave you to it, shall I?”
