Chapter 19

They went through a third set of sliding doors into another long corridor with glass walls and glass doors. Taal took them to the fifth door on the left and pressed his hand against it. The door slid open.

Inside was a large space. The walls were glass, as Julian had come to expect, and there seemed, again, to be no barrier between the outside and the inside. Plants grew lushly outside, although some of their fronds and a few small branches continued into Taal’s apartment, yet when Julian investigated, pressing his hand against the wall, they were as solid as concrete. There were clear couches that seem to be filled with water and when Julian sat on it he rocked a little. There was a large table surrounded by eight chairs, another couch and a bookcase laden with all manner of books.

“Come with me,” said Taal.
