Chapter 42

Elena told me the police still treated my place as a crime scene. Pictures taken by the police showed the pools of blood that stained the carpet and floors. Elena got permission to haul some clothes and personal belongings to Lou Ann’s like my iPad. She took the ring I saved for Chel for safe-keeping. Everything else, the dishes, kitchenware, I didn’t care about. She donated my TV to a neighbor. Elena told the apartment complex I didn’t plan on returning, which prevented the manager from posting an eviction notice.

Doc asked me if there was anything of Noah’s that I wanted. I couldn’t think of anything but the leather jacket he loved to wear, which he dropped off and now laid next to the bed. At night, when the house sat quiet, and I lay still, I would grab the jacket, rub my hand and smell the citrusy scent of his cologne.

Lou Ann hummed a tune that brought me out of my thoughts.

“Where’s your better half?”
