Chapter 9

“It’s hard to believe anyone could neglect these poor things,” said Benjamin as he looked at all the little canine faces gazing up at him from the inside of their wire enclosures, tongues hanging out and tails wagging expectantly.

“Not all of them are neglected as such,” Sharon explained. “Some have been abandoned. Some were found and brought in by members of the general public.”

“I’d love to take them all home with me,” Benjamin said. “Are there any who’ve had a particularly hard time?”

Sharon thought for a moment then took them to an enclosure a few metres further along.

“Sasha, here, was found close to death, covered in her own filth and there was evidence she’d been severely beaten. We got to her just in time. She’s a lovely dog, a Brittany. A bit shy, but that’s probably because she wasn’t given a very good start in life.”
