Chapter 15

I can almost hear her laugh in the tinkle of wine glasses and silverware around us.

Dinner is over all too soon. When the check comes, both of us reach for it at the same time, but I manage to grab it first. “I got paid by Amazon today,” I tell Greg with a wink. “Sex sells, and I hear teachers are underpaid. Let me get this.”

He grins. “I’ll get it next time.”

So this won’t be our only date. Thank you, Jesus, I pray as I dig out my wallet. I was afraid being honest with him about Lisa would’ve scared him off. Back in college, before I was married, a potential love interest with a history of heterosexuality and a young son would probably have sent me screaming for the hills.

On the walk back to my car, his arm slips around my waist and he pulls me near. His body is warm where it presses against mine, comforting, familiar. And soft. He didsay he could be soft. I nuzzle into his shoulder and sigh. “I had a wonderful time.”
