Chapter 14

I look at him openly. “You. The moment I saw you, I knew Lisa would approve.”

“She sounds like one hell of a lady. I wish I’d had a chance to know her.” He raises his glass, and waits for me to raise mine, which has considerably less wine in it than his. “To Lisa.”

“Love you, sweetheart,” I say, clinking my glass to his. A knot in the back of my throat threatens to ruin the evening, but I swallow it down and blow my nose with my napkin. “They wash these, right?”

Greg gives me an arched look. “That one I think they’ll just throw away.”

I laugh again, my mood lifting at his joke. “Oh yes, Lisa would’ve definitely loved you. She always liked people who could make her laugh. If she were here…”

Sobering, Greg set his glass aside. “If she werehere, you wouldn’t be, would you?” When I give him a questioning look, he shrugs. “Here, with me, tonight. Unless she was okay with you seeing men on the side…”
