Chapter 16

Settling himself on the couch, he pressed the answer button. “Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” Avery returned. “Just calling to see if you did all right this morning?”

“Yeah, fine, thanks,” O.B. answered.

“Was that breakfast enough for you?”

“Yeah, sure. It was great,” O.B. answered again.

Avery was silent for a few seconds before saying, “Is something wrong?”

Realizing blaming Avery for fate intervening in his life was stupid, O.B. said, “I’m sorry. Nothing to do with you. Well, yeah, maybe it kinda is.” He laughed ruefully. “But I sorta got recognized a buncha times at the store on the way home.”

“I’m sorry.”

O.B. could tell from Avery’s tone that he truly felt bad.

“Guess I’ll have to confine my sexual escapades to your apartment,” O.B. said with a rueful laugh.

“Would that be all that bad? I thought we hit it off pretty well last night.”
