Chapter 17

“Raum!” he called, but Raum did not move.

He called again, and this time his beloved looked up.

“Over here,” called Charam as loudly as he could.

Raum cocked his head to one side, his eyes seemingly searching the space in front of him.

“Raum! Raum! Over here. It’s me, Charam!”

He ran towards Raum, who sighed and put his head back in his hands. As he got within touching distance, the image disappeared, yet Charam didn’t stop. He continued running, knowing now what he had to do. He had to go to the Hole in the Rock and get Raum out. He didn’t know how it was going to be possible. He had no power and no influence. Still, he would rescue Raum if it was the last thing he did, and perhaps, just perhaps, Raum might forgive him for his betrayals and for his childish behaviour. He also dared to hope that this forgiveness might include Raum removing his second skin of faces whose eyes even now observed the surrounding landscape.
