Chapter 24

“I could fire you for that,” Katie hissed.

“Go ahead. Where are you going to find another detective that’s even half as good as me?” Alexis said with a snort. As conceited as it sounded, it was also the truth. Alexis had closed more cases than any one of the other team members.

“Point taken,” Katie grumbled.

“Katie, talk to me. You’ve lost an awfully lot of weight these past few weeks. I’m worried about you. Do you think I don’t notice those dizzy spells you’re having?” Alexis’s hand reclaimed Katie’s knee.

“I can’t, Alexis.” Katie stared at the sand, focusing on the tiny granules. “Please, I can’t.” She turned to face Alexis with lingering fear in her eyes. “Let’s just get back to the case, okay.” Katie tried to stand, but nearly hit the ground again.

“Dizzy…” she gasped.

“Katie,” Alexis wrapped her arm around Katie and helped to steady her trembling body. “Why won’t you talk to me?”
