“Yes. One o’clock.”

“Right, yes, right.” I was momentarily blindsided. “Leave it with me, I’ll tell Mark, and we’ll be up on Thursday morning.”

“Are you sure? It’s short notice.”

“I’m sure.”

“Sorry. Thank you.”

I looked at my watch. I’d be late, but Roy was more important. “How have you been keeping?”

“Pretty much the same. The headaches and the back pains haven’t gotten any worse.”

“Good.”

“Sorry, were you about to leave for work?”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It does. I’ll ring you tonight.”

With a promise that we’d call Roy instead, me explaining it wasn’t right that he pay for all the calls, we hung up.
