Chapter 54

“Dad, do we have to do all this now? It’s moving too quickly,” Mark said when we’d come out of the estate agent’s.

“I want all my affairs put in order. When your mum died, as you know, things took ages to get sorted. I don’t want all that falling on you and Simon when I’ve gone.”

Mark swallowed and nodded his agreement.

The next stop was the solicitors. Mark and I waited in the reception area while Roy finalised his will and made whatever other arrangements he needed to make. On emerging, Roy told Mark everything—save for a small bequest to Alcoholics Anonymous—was going to him.

Next was the post office where Roy filled in forms to change his mailing address. This was followed by the bank where Roy insisted on putting Mark on his account. “It’ll make it easier for you to withdraw money and to transfer the stuff completely into your name when the time comes.”

My head spun at all that needed to be done and how efficiently Roy was doing it.
