Chapter 42

The phone woke me around 2:00 P.M. “Are you up yet?” It was Katie.

“Mmmmph rrrbt,” I think I said.

“Well, if you want to get up today, I’m going down to the theater in a bit. They’re doing a read through, and I’m gonna try and take some measurements. What did Chris call you again? Oh yeah, as the ‘House Manager,’ maybe you wanna come along.”

“Wwwwrrfl mmmrrbt,” I replied, struggling as I sometimes do to remember where I was. Am I on a layover? If so, where? And who is this on the phone? Am I being reassigned by the crew desk? Wait, I recognize the view out the window…this is my apartment. Thank goodness! I love waking up at home. Why am I holding this phone, though?

I set it down, and twenty seconds later it rang angrily again. This time I managed a much more coherent “Hello.”

“Okay, now you sound awake,” Katie announced. “So do you wanna come with me down to the theater in a little bit?”

“Sure, I guess so. I think I might need a shower first, though.”
