Chapter 12

“Nothing,” Dayna said. She looked around the room in panic.

Kevin sat on the floor, shuffling cards.

Ash was gone.

“I just wanted to make sure you kids were behaving. Your mother and I are going to need your help soon,” Tom said. He left without another word.

Dayna dropped to her knees. She felt like she was going to pass out. “That was so close.”

“Where the heck did Ash go?” Kevin asked.

Dayna looked around the room again. A blanket hung off Kevin’s bed, and she crawled over and lifted the corner.

Ash peeked at her, wrapped in her own blanket. “I didn’t have time to get on the roof.”

“That’s all right, it still worked.” Dayna wiped sweat from her face. “That was crazy. Just when we think we’ve got them figured out they change.”

As Ash crawled out from under the bed, another car started and backed out of the driveway.

“Huh, party’s over,” Kevin said. “I thought their friends would be here the rest of the night.”
