Chapter 14

“We have to be at work in an hour,” Jean said.

“One drink won’t hurt anything. Stop trying to change the subject. You’re cheating on me.”

“No, I’m not. You’re the one changing the subject. You shouldn’t have done that to her.”

“They deserved to be punished.”

“You didn’t want to punish her, you wanted to—”

“Shut up!” Tom yelled. He punched the wall again to keep from punching her. There had only been a few times when he’d gotten carried away and hit Jean, but she always understood he hadn’t meant it.

Jean cringed like she always did, and Tom stood in front of her with his arms outspread.

“You can’t leave,” he said. “I don’t know what I’d do without you. I’d probably kill myself.”

Jean gasped. “No, please don’t.”
