Chapter 99

Kevin walked a few feet ahead, still rolling the cooler behind him.

“Look you guys, a river!” he shouted.

Ash quickened her pace, and then smiled. The body of water they were approaching was no river. It was only fifteen feet wide at the most and was surely just a creek, flowing right across their path.

“Let’s stop and rest,” she said. “I’ll show you the compass rose and we’ll figure out where to go from here.”

They sat near the muddy bank and passed the milk around, drinking from the jug. Kevin handed Ash the map; he’d insisted keeping it in his backpack should be his job.

“These are the directions of the compass,” Ash pointed out. “North, south, east and west.”

Kevin squinted at the crinkled paper. “Oh, I get it.”
