Chapter 116

“Are you hungry?” Ash asked.

“No.”

“Please eat.”

“I don’t want to.” She rested her head on the edge of the bench and covered her face with her arm. She knew it wasn’t really Ash’s fault Kevin was sick, but she just didn’t feel like talking to her right now.

At four o’clock, Tom picked Jean up from her job and drove home. “We’ll get things taken care of once and for all.”

“We’d better.”

Tom walked into the house and pounded up the stairs. Dayna and Kevin’s room was just as he’d left it this morning.

“Jean?” he called, tramping back down to the living room. “They’re still gone.”

Realization crept through his body. Jean stood in the living room, beer in hand, with a stricken look on her face.

“You don’t think…” Tom said.

“They can’t have,” she whispered.

“It’s impossible! Where would they go?”

“They can’t be far. Maybe they’re hiding in the back yard. My God, how long have they been gone?”
