Chapter 12

She met his steady gaze and paled at the rage she saw boiling in him. Through clenched teeth, he growled, “Don’t everlie to me again. Understand?”

His face was inches from hers, as though he’d bite off her nose, then sever her head out of spite. She nodded, barely, and gulped in air when he finally relaxed his strangling grip. The rope was in his other hand, and he tied it around her wrists. Captive, again.

“Get your stuff and come on,” he said, tugging the rope to make sure it was secure. Shaela’s wrists ached. “We need to find somewhere else to eat. This clearing is too…messy.”

His voice held a sharp edge that hadn’t been there before. Shaela felt hot tears sting her eyes and she blinked to clear them. She wouldn’t cry before this man. She wouldn’t, couldn’t,give him the satisfaction.

She hated him too much.
