“The next night, they were replaced with an even more hideous monster.” She looked pointedly at him.

“It’s so nice to be appreciated.”

Shaela chose not to comment. “Why are you here?”

“You could say I was in the neighborhood.” Airk grinned. “I stumbled across your trail, but somehow you anticipated me. Your choice of hiding places was poor, though. I saw a hundred others.”

“Don’t criticize me,” Shaela huffed. “What are you going to do now?”

“What do you mean?”

“You know, with me. You can let me go. I promise I won’t tell anyone about our encounter.” She tried to look sincere and held up a hand as a sign of her pledge, but she knew the minute she saw Ford, she would tell him about every horrible moment she spent with this man.

“Yeah, right,” Airk scoffed. “And I’m the King of Andemni. When will you stop lying? I know the first minute you can, you’re going to tell Ford how much you hate me.”

“What are your plans, then?” she asked through clenched teeth.
