Chapter 14

“You don’t really want to travel across the Baer’s, do you?”

He looked at her, silent.

She continued. “I know some trails that would get us to Andemni quickly. In less than a week, we’d meet up with Ford. If you’re going the way I think you are, it’ll take us twice as long to reach the Plains. And traveling through the woods is dangerous.”

He knew those same trails but chose not to comment on them. “I can protect you.”

She laughed. “I’ve no doubt of that. What bothers me is the direction we’re traveling. Either we’re taking the long route, or you lied and we aren’t going to see Ford.”

Angry, he grew defensive and leaped to his feet. “I gave you my word, didn’t I? I’m an honorable man.”

“You could’ve fooled me,” she said archly.

He stalked across the cavern to the other wall and threw himself to the ground. Folding his arms across his chest, he glared at her. She gave him a smirk so faint, it might’ve been the product of imagination and firelight.
