Chapter 15

The Baret sat beside him. “Why?”

“Some men are sick, some busy with travelers. But most are looking into rumors from Tyrian.”

“What kind of rumors?”

“Oh, you know,” the Captain said as he finished the Baret’s dinner. “Maelnords up this way, the like.”

The Baret leaned forward, intense. “What of that?”

“Well now, it seems you might be interested in what I have to say.”

Wray nodded.

“At what price?”

Wray smiled. The Captain hadn’t changed—shrewd and cunning, he wasn’t willing to be left out of affairs. “Let’s bargain, shall we? I tell you what brings me south, and you tell me about these rumors of yours. Deal?”

The Captain laughed. “Deal. I’ll go first. It’s nice to have someone to talk to—all my men are too busy for a nice chat. At least, they always look busy whenever I walk by.
