With a grin, the Baret apologized. “Sorry, friend, but you were nowhere in sight, and things were getting a bit hairy. Besides, the monsters didn’t want to meet you face to face. Your reputation precedes you, I’m afraid.”

Airk bowed with a flourish. “You’re too kind, old friend. And there’s no need to fear me.”

“Come, sit by our fire.” Artaz motioned for them to join him, and they complied. Shaela sat as close to Artaz as she dared, with Airk on her other side. The Baret seated himself beside his old friend, and the Princess settled down beside her father’s Baret, across the fire from Shaela. They glared at each other through the flame, still bristling with distrust.
