Chapter 19

“Oh, no. It’s fascinating.”

“Very well.” He leaned back and prepared to talk about one of his favorite topics—himself. “My mother’s family name was Ranon, which I took. She was in love with Naythan Todd, and told me one day he’d return and we’d be a real family. It was a lie—he must’ve sired hundreds of illegitimate children all across the Lands of Pharr. But she was a dreamer, and I hated them both. Him because he never returned and her because she believed in him. Each night she cried herself to sleep because he hadn’t shown up to take her away. Finally I’d had enough and left.”

Shaela sat back, shocked. “How old were you?”
