“Not much,” the Baret replied. “The altar near Staggra’s is a league or so north of the village, towards the mountains. That’s about it.”

“At least you got more than we did.” Airk looked around at his companions. “Do we continue, or stop for the night?”

They reached a consensus and stopped a mile from the city walls to camp in the forest.

That night, after the fire burned down and they turned into their blankets to sleep, Shaela rolled to face Jaelin. “Are you awake?”

At first the only sound was the outlaw’s snoring, but then her sister rolled over and propped her head on her hand. “What’s the matter?”

“Nothing really. I wanted to ask you a few questions.”

“Okay.”

The older girl sighed. “Well, what’s life like in a palace? Is it grand and glamorous, like the fairy tales say?”
