He gave her a distracted grin. “We still have a few days to say our goodbyes. But right now, I think Skotak’s onto something.”

Rising, he and the Emini paced the dungeon, sniffing the air. Shaela sniffled a little, then moved over to sit beside Elke. She’d noticed the smell when she began moving the hay around. It was a rancid odor she remembered from a few years back, when the sewer line running from their cabin burst due to a dead hedgehog. They hadn’t realized the pipe was clogged until it overflowed and the outhouse flooded with foul waste. It wasn’t pleasant to smell—Elke held her nose, and Shaela was glad she’d moved. The smell was less offensive on the other side of the dungeon.

Airk returned to where Shaela had been sitting. Kneeling down, he brushed away her carefully arranged hay. “Skotak! Come see what I found!”
