Chapter 45

“Who’s us?” Airk wanted to know.

Without an answer, the man leaped off the sewer ledge into the darkness below. Skotak leaned over to take a look, then called Airk to join him.

Directly below sat a wagon full of hay. A man and woman Airk didn’t recognize stood amid the hay, leaving a space between them where the others could jump. The wagon’s driver raised his dusty hat to look at the prisoners. The face was familiar but covered in mud and dirt, and they couldn’t place it right away.

“Jump!” Dungan Weir called from the wagon’s box seat. “Guards are coming!”

Without further hesitation, Airk gave Elke a shove, then helped Shaela over the edge, too. One by one they landed in the soft hay below. Skotak and Airk were the last, and as soon as they hit the hay, Dungan spurred the horses forward. Almost immediately, guards appeared above the sewer pipe. With arrows raining around them, Dungan hurried toward the docks.
