Navigating the inlet was difficult; coral deposits threatened to rip the hull from the ship. But once they reached Ellers’ Lake, the sailing smoothed out and the Amuktachinokpulled up to a small pier.

There waited the creatures first viewed in the hologram outside Barre. The tallest was no more than two feet high. Their naked skin was pink and grimy, and long hair erupted from their scalps. Each had a bulbous nose and shiny eyes, round and black like a hamster’s. Beyond, small thatched huts rose from the scant grassland, and a waterfall ran into the lake, completing the hologram’s image.

“What are they?” Shaela whispered as they made their way down the gangplank.

“Ellers,” Airk replied. “Hence the name. Unimaginative, if you ask me.”
